The online news platform of Five Thirty Eight was known as "Nate Silver's Political Calculus" by many during its creation in 2008 and was subtitled that during the acquisition by the New York Times (NYT). It would be the number cruncher for many of the NYTs big articles, as well as break things down into simple themes and run opinion polls. In July of 2013 sports juggernaut ESPN announced its plan to purchase Five Thirty Eight and name Nate Silver Editor and Chief. It would go to win prized "Webbies" for outstanding freelance/independent journalism as well as for best political news site. While remaining and independent site, Five Thirty Eight uses ESPN and Disney family interfaces as a tie in on their own virtual platform. Beyond just standard news Five Thirty Eight compiles hundreds of different polling numbers from several polling services and runs its own polls as a side by side comparison. Five Thirty Eight also runs multiple opinion polls on a wide range of topics from politics, to sports, to entertainment.
